Pale hands grabbed the frame of the living room door, as the man strained to keep upright. He pushed himself forward, missing the sofa, falling hopelessly to his knees.

His breathing was as wild as his thoughts; memories of the day’s words, screaming what he’d done.

‘Stop it,’ he hissed, running his shaking hands through his dirty hair. ‘What can I do… what can I do?’

How could this have happened?

Surely he knew every detail about her life; surely he knew she had bore a child of that month.

He only ever made mistakes when it came to Lily.
